19 Truths (I Believe) Everyone on a Healing Path Should Know
From a Reiki Master Who Lives and Loves the Practice
What I’ve come to understand about energy, being whole, being human, and letting love lead the way—healing lessons from walking the Reiki Path with other humans, animals and myself. Get comfy and let me take you down a rabbit hole about healing and living life with our whole hearts.
Intro: The Part About Reiki Most People Don’t Know
I know, I know. Everybody and their mother seem to have at least a Reiki Level 1 certificate these days. And honestly, that’s wonderful. The world needs all the Reiki practitioners it can get.
However, I also find that Reiki often gets a little misunderstood or brushed off as just another, boring old energy healing technique. Many don’t seem to realise that Reiki is SO much more than sending healing energy or knowing where to put our hands. But it is!
I am writing this blog as someone who only took her first Level 1 class because it was a. something new, b. she had liked the effect of one session and c. it was, uhh, fairly cheap at the time. You’ll find no judgement here, trust me.
What many do not know is that the system of Reiki that started with a man named Mikao Usui about 100 years ago is a whole (dang) path to enlightenment, with deep spiritual foundations?
A spiritual path that is rooted in compassion, presence and the remembrance of oneness. And this oneness being the ultimate wisdom. Let that sink in, please. Separation is a myth, babes. ✨
The philosophy and lessons of Reiki hold truths that, to me, feel especially radical in our world which is so full of hustle, perfectionism, and over-identification with the thinking mind. It even goes along nicely with trauma-informed and anti-oppressive framework, due to its gentleness, empowering elements, invitation to slow down, reconnect, and remember we’re already whole. Which I adore.
How I Came to Know These Reiki Truths. And Why I Think They Matter for You Too.
I’m not exaggerating when I say that getting into Reiki has changed how I approach life and healing. Especially since I started to really immerse myself in its philosophy. For me that meant meditating with the energy, being Reiki, letting animals be my teachers, and allowing the full spiritual weight of the practice to hit me. Sometimes that happened gently, sometimes not gently at all.
Working with other humans and animals, I’ve witnessed again and again how Reiki reveals deeper truths about what it means to be human and soul, to heal, and to come home to ourselves. How to be in the world in a way that’s healing for us and for others.
There’s so much that Reiki can teach us about wholeness and healing–and approaching those in a way that can be wildly liberating. It is powerful medicine to point us back to real freedom, authentic connection, and the courage to surrender what we cannot control. (Scary, I know.)
The Lessons I Wish I Could Tell Everyone (But I Often Don’t Because That Would Be Annoying)
That’s why I want to share 19 truths that–I believe–everyone on a healing path should know. Whether or not you practice Reiki yourself.
These go beyond the system of Reiki itself. Think of them as universal lessons and reminders that have been brought home through practicing Reiki, experiencing Reiki, learning about the way energy works (as a Reiki person). They come through in my own healing journey but also by witnessing humans and animals on theirs. And what a pleasure that keeps on being.
(I have found them within Reiki. Others may find them in other places too. 🫶)
They are what I often find myself wanting to say to everyone around me, client or no client. I mostly don’t, though. Unsolicited advice is the worst, am I right?
But since YOU have found your way here and you’re still reading: I assume you do want to know what someone like me (OG Reiki Mistress and Devotee) can tell you about healing and wholeness. And about how to walk through life more deeply connected and with an open heart.
Here they are.
The 19 Truths Reiki Taught Me And That You Might Want to Know For Your Own Healing and Home-Coming
1. Holding space is an act of love and healing in itself.
To make space for another being, their needs, and whatever comes up, without making it about ourselves or trying to fix it, is the ultimate gift. And that includes the space you hold for yourself, dear one.
2. Good things happen when we surrender, trust and allow.
When we get out of the way of the flow of energy, of life and stop resisting so much… the shift in energy is huge. Plus, it saves so much energy.
3. It is not only absolutely okay but also necessary, to slow the f@*# down.
Stillness creates the space that allows healing to take happen. It is in the slowing down that the processing and integration can occur, and that our bodies feel safe enough to connect with deeper parts in ourselves.
4. You are much more than your physical body or your thoughts, or emotions.
You have an energy body too, and a spiritual side. Some would say that’s what you truly are: a soul having a human experience. Your soul is that bright inner light in the center of your being. It might hide under sooo many layers, but it is always there. Believe me. I see this it in every Reiki session I share.
5. Love and connection heal, literally.
One, because that’s what Reiki energy is: love, compassion, connection. And I know for a fact that Reiki heals. Two, it’s the connection and deep presence that open up the most powerful healing spaces (something Reiki with animals has taught me most profoundly). You can totally lean into that without being a Reiki practitioner.
6. Everything is connected and healing is a collective endeavour.
Okay, first of all, I need to say that because I’m a sociologist. But it’s true on every level: Energetically and spiritually, we’re all one. My healing ripples out and touches others. Yours does, too. When we hurt others, we hurt ourselves. When we heal, we create space for others to heal. Healing ourselves is part of healing the collective, and healing the collective supports our own.
7. The ‘practice’ (intentional doing) is everything.
It is more important than getting it right or reaching some destination. Practicing ‚that thing’ that you wish to embody is what brings the change you want. Not magic spells, but dedication and intent. It is the practice itself that changes you, just by you doing it and then surrendering to what it brings about.
8. You do not need to know all the answers, in fact, you don’t even have them.
Thank goodness. How limiting would it be to think we have all the answers… and lonely too. Allow yourself to become empty, make space within so you can be open to and notice all the possibilities and answers coming your way.
9. You cannot heal with the mind only what the mind has created.
Embodiment peeps will tell you that too. And it leads me, the Reiki practitioner, right to the next truth.
10. You are severely (!) underestimating the power of your soul for the healing you seek.
So don’t forget it on your healing journey. I know that because that is where Reiki does its most potent magic. By harmonising and assisting the flow of energy on the soul/spiritual level which then spreads out to all the other aspects of you: mental, emotional, physical.
11. You can strive all you want, it’s not gonna bring you the happiness or healing you seek.
Because when you hold on too tight, nothing can move. You gotta open at least a liiiittle to the unknown, babe. Let some of that ego and wish to control the outcome (and other people, beings) go.
12. You are already whole, you’ve just forgotten.
And now it’s about removing the layers that keep you from living like you are. How would it feel to walk through life being truly aware of that wholeness that no one can take away?
13. Letting go of anger, worry, being grateful, honest to your way and being, and showing compassion is healing.
Taking away what disconnects us while refocusing on connection and being part of something bigger is healing, and brings more inner peace. (Look at me sneaking in the Reiki precepts here, tehe.)
14. Ego work is healing work.
Get to it. It’s keeping you from experiencing true connection and wholeness.
15. Living with an open heart is not for the weak.
It takes a lot of courage, strength and vulnerability. Yes, we might get hurt. We probably will, if I am being honest. But the depths available on the other side is so worth it.
16. The rest of the natural world (+ the spirit world) is here to support your healing.
If you are open, seek it out and connect with them. You do not have to go it alone. I am telling you: your own cat or dog, songbirds, the lake, trees, mountains and stones, the creek behind the park, your guides–they are all rooting for your healing and your homecoming to your truest self.
17. Your soul is unique and so is your path.
No one but your soul knows its truest expression or the exact way forward. No guru, ‚healer‘, coach or spiritual teacher, psychologist or psychotherapist. The good ones will be able to help you find out though, and create the space that helps you get there.
18. Life will (continue to) happen, so find a practice that helps you survive it.
Better yet: fine one that helps you return to a feeling of peace, makes you come back to yourself, no matter the condition. Something that brings you joy, satisfaction, deep fulfilment. That could be meditation, painting, caring for kittens, or whatever can become your anchor to your innermost you. (And it’s okay to have human or animal backup too. Healing happens in connection and community.)
19. It’s your that light heals the world.
The more it expands, the more the whole world is helped by it, so: be the light. And that’s really it. Every time you reconnect with it, honor it, or let it shine just a liiittle brighter, you ripple healing out into the world around you. And that helps you and everyone else.
